چکیده

This article is based on a n extensive report with the same title and available from the Univenity oj Toronto Puljo &Paper Centre. referred to as pulp) used in the manufacture of a variety of paper products. The chemicals assessed in this report include chlorination derivatives of 10 compounds (oleic acid, linoleic acid, stearic acid, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, prenols, squalene, phenol, catechol and guaiacol) identified in chlorine-bleached wood pulp or wood pulp degradation products [ 11. These derivatives result from chlorine bleaching of wood pulp and include both chlorinated and nonchlorinated compounds (hence the term chlorination derivatives). Polychlorinated dioxins and furans were not examined in this report, as the potential health risks from dermal exposure to TCDD and its equivalents in paper products have been assessed already and have been determined to be insignificant [Z]. The paper products examined here represent personal-use products including bond paper (a high quality, white paper), disposable diapers, facial tissue, toilet tissue, sanitary pads and paper towels. Consideration of food-contact products (such as food packaging) or of other types of bleached paper was not within the scope of this project. The toxicological assessment of the chlorination derivatives present in pulp used to manufacture a variety of paper products involved three steps: An assessment of the potential toxicological hazards of the derivatives; An assessment of the exposure of consumers of paper products to the derivatives; A comparison of the hazard and exposure assessments to evaluate possible effects on human health due to exposure to chlorination derivatives in the paper products. The methodology followed to conduct the above three steps and the results obtained are discussed in the following sections under the headings of hazard assessment, exposure assessment, and sa€ety assessment, respectively. ~ A Z A R D ASSESSMENT

Clean Bleaching Engineering Practice for Bagasse Pulp: Totally Chlorine-Free and Elemental Chlorine-Free Bleaching Realized with the Same Production Line

The experimental research, process design principles, and engineering practice of a bagasse pulp production line that could run both totally chlorine-free (OP)Q(PO) and elemental chlorine-free (OP)D(EOP) bleaching sequences are discussed in this paper. Under specified process conditions, the oxygen delignification rate was up to 50% and the brightness of unbleached pulp increased. The (OP)Q(PO)...

Hazardous Substance Reduction in the Food Processing Industry

Chlorine is used in relatively large concentrations (2000ppm v/w) in flour bleaching processes. No successful by-product identification work has been performed on chlorinated flour despite demonstrated hazards of chlorination on animals in feeding studies. The focus of this work is therefore to examine the chlorination process and identify the by-products formed from the chlorination of cake fl...

Evaluation and Management of Health and Safety Risks of Chlorine Gas in Transportation Routes

Background: More than 90% of goods movement in Iran is done by road transport. A significant part of these materials is dangerous goods. Considering that chlorine gas is considered a toxic and oxidizing substance, predicting the way of release and mortality due to accidental leakage of chlorine gas can be a crucial tool in adopting preventive strategies. This study aims to evaluate the safety o...

Analysis of Chlorine Gas Incident Simulation and Dispersion Within a Complex and Populated Urban Area Via Computation Fluid Dynamics

In some instances, it is inevitable that large amounts of potentially hazardous chemicals like chlorine gas are stored and used in facilities in densely populated areas. In such cases, all safety issues must be carefully considered. To reach this goal, it is important to have accurate information concerning chlorine gas behaviors and how it is dispersed in dense urban areas. Furthermore, mainta...
